Pediatric brain tumors result from the combined effects of multiple factors; in some cases, no definitive cause can be identified. If symptoms such as recurrent vomiting or gait abnormalities occur, prompt medical evaluation and treatment are essential.

Causes of pediatric brain tumors include genetic factors, aberrant transformation of embryonic residual tissue, environmental radiation exposure, viral infections, and maternal factors during pregnancy. Pediatric brain tumors typically result from the combined effects of multiple factors; in some cases, no definitive cause can be identified. If symptoms such as recurrent vomiting or gait abnormalities occur, prompt medical evaluation and treatment are essential.

1. Genetic factors: Certain pediatric brain tumors involve genetic alterations. A family history of similar tumors increases disease risk. Following gene mutations, dysregulation of cellular proliferation control occurs, leading to uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Importantly, genetics does not directly transmit the disease but rather elevates susceptibility.

2. Aberrant transformation of embryonic residual tissue: During fetal brain development, some embryonic tissues fail to regress and disappear normally, persisting within the cranial cavity. As the child grows, these residual tissues may undergo abnormal proliferation upon stimulation, gradually progressing into brain tumors. Many pediatric brain tumors are closely associated with such embryonic remnants.

3. Environmental radiation exposure: Excessive ionizing radiation to the head can damage neuronal DNA and trigger malignant cellular transformation. Radiation from everyday household appliances generally poses no such risk; most relevant exposures stem from therapeutic cranial radiotherapy. Because children’s brain cells are still developing, they are more vulnerable to radiation-induced injury.

4. Viral infection: Certain specific viruses, upon invading the human body, may disrupt normal cellular division processes. In children—whose immune defenses are not yet fully mature—infection may lead to dysregulated brain cell proliferation. While viruses may act as a contributing factor, mere viral exposure does not inevitably result in brain tumor development.

5. Maternal factors during pregnancy: Maternal exposure to harmful chemical substances or ingestion of hazardous medications during pregnancy can interfere with fetal brain development. These toxic agents cross the placenta and adversely affect fetal brain tissue, increasing the child’s postnatal risk of developing a brain tumor. Appropriate prenatal precautions can help mitigate such risks.

Prior to conception and throughout pregnancy, avoid all harmful chemical exposures. Children should avoid unnecessary cranial radiation examinations whenever possible. Carefully monitor children’s growth and development, and promptly pursue appropriate diagnostic evaluations if any abnormalities arise.
