How to Handle Nosebleeds in Children
Many children experience nosebleeds after developing “internal heat” (a traditional Chinese medicine concept referring to inflammatory or hyperactive conditions). So, how should nosebleeds in children be managed?
How to Manage Nosebleeds in Children
The first priority is to stop the bleeding. Gently pinch the soft part of the nostril on the same side as the bleeding for 5–10 minutes using the thumb and index finger. Applying an ice pack to the forehead can also help stop bleeding quickly. However, because ice is extremely cold, it may irritate a child’s delicate skin. To mitigate this, wrap the ice pack in a towel before applying it to the forehead—this reduces cold exposure and minimizes pressure on the skin. In cases of chronic rhinitis causing nasal mucosal erosion and recurrent epistaxis, treatment under medical supervision—including topical corticosteroid nasal sprays and regular nasal irrigation with isotonic saline—may be recommended. However, if the nosebleed results from nose-picking, no specific treatment is required; simply maintaining nasal cleanliness and dryness suffices.

If the nosebleed is caused by trauma, clean the wound first, then apply direct manual pressure to the affected area to control bleeding. Afterward, insert a sterile cotton ball into the nostril to provide additional tamponade. For epistaxis secondary to a deviated nasal septum, consultation with an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) is advised, and surgical correction may be necessary. If bleeding is profuse and cannot be controlled, prompt medical attention is essential—electrocautery may be required to achieve hemostasis.

To prevent nosebleeds, discourage children from picking their noses and avoid feeding them foods that are considered “heat-inducing” (e.g., spicy, fried, or overly rich foods). Encourage adequate fluid intake to keep the nasal mucosa moist. A light, balanced diet—low in spicy or highly stimulating foods—and rich in fresh fruits and vegetables supports overall health.
