Introduction
Tinnitus may occur under conditions of high work- and life-related stress, especially when accompanied by poor sleep or frequent mood fluctuations. It can also arise in association with inflammatory ear conditions such as otitis media. If tinnitus is intermittent and accompanied by a sensation of ear fullness or blockage, it is advisable to visit a hospital for an otolaryngological examination of the external auditory canal to assess for cerumen impaction.

These patients experience persistent tinnitus, leaving them fatigued and listless throughout the day. Uncertain of the underlying cause, they wonder: What causes recurrent tinnitus?

What Causes Recurrent Tinnitus?

Tinnitus may arise under conditions of high work- or life-related stress—particularly when accompanied by poor sleep quality or frequent emotional fluctuations. It can also occur secondary to inflammatory ear conditions such as otitis media.

If tinnitus is intermittent and associated with a sensation of ear fullness or blockage, it is advisable to visit an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist for examination of the external auditory canal—specifically to rule out cerumen impaction. If impacted cerumen is found, irrigation of the external auditory canal may be performed; successful removal typically resolves the tinnitus. In cases of chronic or recurrent tinnitus, sensorineural (neurological) tinnitus is more likely. Under a physician’s guidance, adjunctive pharmacotherapy—including neurotrophic agents and microcirculation-improving drugs—may be prescribed. Patients should adjust their rest schedule, go to bed earlier, and avoid fatigue and excessive stress. Improving sleep quality often leads to rapid alleviation of tinnitus symptoms.

Patients should try to divert attention away from the tinnitus and avoid over-focusing on it. Persistent tinnitus may sometimes be exacerbated by excessive anxiety or preoccupation with the symptom; therefore, minimizing worry and maintaining a calm, positive mental state is essential—favorable psychological well-being often facilitates quicker recovery from tinnitus. Regular, moderate physical activity is recommended, and exposure to excessively noisy environments should be avoided. We hope this information proves helpful!
