Any ear disorder can cause some degree of damage to the ear. Tinnitus not only impairs hearing but also adversely affects overall physical health. So, what are the causes of tinnitus?

Causes of Tinnitus

Inner ear infections or ear trauma may trigger tinnitus. For instance, secondary tinnitus can occur in cases of otitis media accompanied by inner ear infection or following ear injury. Tinnitus is broadly classified into primary (idiopathic) and secondary types. Based on symptom duration, it is further categorized as either intermittent or chronic (persistent) tinnitus.

Individuals frequently exposed to noisy environments in daily life are particularly susceptible to tinnitus. The longer the duration of noise exposure, the higher the likelihood of developing tinnitus. Prolonged exposure to impact sounds and loud noise may lead to severe hearing loss and intermittent tinnitus; in severe cases, chronic tinnitus may develop. Therefore, noise control measures—such as wearing ear protectors (e.g., earplugs or earmuffs) and avoiding prolonged exposure to high-intensity noise—are essential for prevention.

Chronic physical fatigue also predisposes individuals to tinnitus. Adjusting work pace, relaxing, and engaging in distracting activities can help prevent and alleviate tinnitus symptoms. Some patients experience tinnitus during prolonged periods of mental stress at work or school, or following sudden, intense emotional stimuli. Moreover, psychological factors—including anxiety, low mood, and depression—can exacerbate tinnitus. To effectively manage tinnitus, maintaining a positive outlook and consciously relaxing both body and mind in daily life is crucial. We hope this article has been helpful to you.
