Can patients with gastric ulcers drink tea?
Peptic ulcer disease is a serious gastric condition that significantly impacts patients’ health. In daily life, attention to dietary habits is essential. Tea, as a common beverage, is widely enjoyed by many people. Given its popularity, a common question arises: Can individuals with peptic ulcers drink tea?
Can individuals with peptic ulcers drink tea?
In general, tea consumption has both beneficial and adverse effects on gastrointestinal health. Tannic acid and caffeine present in tea can stimulate the secretion of gastric acid and pepsin, thereby enhancing digestive function. However, tea may also exert harmful irritant effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Particularly when consuming strong (concentrated) tea, excessive gastric acid secretion may occur, potentially exacerbating peptic ulcer symptoms. Therefore, individuals with peptic ulcers are advised to avoid tea altogether—especially strong tea—and to limit even mild (light) tea intake, avoiding prolonged or excessive consumption.

When one is fasting, the stomach is relatively empty. Drinking large quantities of tea under such conditions may dilute gastric acid and suppress appetite. Patients with peptic ulcers often already experience poor appetite; drinking tea on an empty stomach may further aggravate anorexia and worsen ulcer symptoms—posing serious risks to health. Strong tea contains high levels of alkaloids and other substances; excessive intake can cause significant systemic irritation, particularly to the gastrointestinal tract, impairing its function and leading to indigestion. Since individuals with peptic ulcers already have compromised gastrointestinal function, prolonged exposure to the irritant effects of strong tea may progressively worsen their symptoms.

Avoid or minimize consumption of spicy foods to prevent damage to the gastric mucosa and to inhibit excessive secretion of gastric acid and pepsin. Similarly, acidic foods should be avoided to protect the gastric mucosa. We hope this information proves helpful.
