How to Treat Toothache
Conditions such as thermal injury (e.g., from hot foods or beverages), dentin hypersensitivity, dental caries, and periodontitis can easily cause toothache. Once toothache occurs, patients often experience intense pain and typically seek rapid relief. So, how is toothache treated?
How to Treat Toothache
Toothache can be managed with medications. During an acute episode, oral anti-inflammatory drugs—most commonly metronidazole—may be taken. Anti-inflammatory agents are particularly effective for toothaches caused by gingival inflammation. Niuhuang Jiedu Wan (Bezoar Detoxifying Pills) is also frequently used to treat toothache, especially when the pain is associated with emotional stress or “excess internal heat” (a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine). Taking Niuhuang Jiedu Wan helps clear internal heat and effectively alleviates toothache symptoms. Guchi Wan (Firm-Teeth Pills) may also be used for toothache, particularly in elderly patients experiencing tooth mobility-related pain; in such cases, appropriate use of Guchi Wan can provide therapeutic benefit.

Toothache may also stem from pulpitis—a common cause of dental pain, typically resulting from deep caries. Bacterial invasion into the pulp chamber leads to congestion and inflammation of the dental nerve. Pain is often spontaneous, tends to worsen at night, and intensifies upon exposure to thermal stimuli (cold or hot).

Patients are advised to pay attention to their dietary habits and consume more coarse, fibrous foods. We hope this information proves helpful.
