How is pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed?
Tuberculosis (TB) is a respiratory disease caused by infection with *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. Its incidence is also high among pregnant women, primarily because pregnancy weakens immune defenses, making women more susceptible to TB infection even with minor exposures. Due to the unique physiological status of pregnant women, numerous contraindications exist regarding diagnostic examinations. So, how is pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed?
How Is Pulmonary Tuberculosis Diagnosed?
Pulmonary tuberculosis can be diagnosed using computed tomography (CT). It is a lung disease primarily caused by infection with *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*, manifesting clinically with symptoms such as cough, sputum production, and fatigue; severe cases may present with persistent low-grade fever, night sweats, and general malaise. If these symptoms appear, tuberculosis should be suspected, and the patient should seek evaluation and treatment at a specialized infectious disease hospital. Once TB is confirmed, early, systematic, and full-course anti-tuberculosis drug therapy is essential to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes.

For diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis, patients typically first present with respiratory symptoms accompanied by fever—including cough, sputum production, blood-tinged sputum, or hemoptysis. If standard antibiotic therapy for over three weeks fails to resolve the respiratory infection, tuberculosis should be strongly considered, and chest imaging studies—such as chest X-ray or CT—are warranted. Chest imaging is a critical tool for confirming the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis.

On chest radiographs, characteristic findings include discrete, high-density, well-defined nodular opacities or hazy, cloud-like infiltrates—findings suggestive of tuberculous lesions. If the patient produces sputum, acid-fast staining of sputum smears and sputum culture are required for definitive diagnosis. Note that sputum smear microscopy carries a risk of false-negative results. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
