Introduction
Spinal osteophytosis still presents numerous clinical symptoms. If it affects the cervical spine, patients may experience neck pain, discomfort, or stiffness. Additional symptoms may include dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, hearing loss, numbness, and weakness in both upper limbs. Patients may also suffer from loss of appetite, anxiety, gait instability, and a sensation of walking on cotton. If the lumbar spine is involved, low back pain is commonly observed.

Spinal osteophytosis (bone spurs) leads to bone and joint deformities, joint pain, restricted mobility, and other symptoms. It primarily affects middle-aged and elderly individuals; however, postpartum women are also considered a high-risk group. So, what are the symptoms of spinal osteophytosis?

Symptoms of Spinal Osteophytosis

Spinal osteophytosis presents with numerous clinical manifestations. When affecting the cervical spine, it may cause neck pain, discomfort, or stiffness. Patients may experience dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, hearing loss, numbness, and weakness in both upper limbs. Additional symptoms may include loss of appetite, anxiety, gait instability, and a sensation of walking on cotton. In lumbar spine involvement, low back pain is common; in severe cases, patients may develop numbness, weakness, and swelling or pain in one or both lower limbs. Radiating pain typically extends from the hip, down the posterior thigh, posterior calf, anterolateral leg, and into the foot.

If pain is the only symptom present, conservative treatment measures may be adopted—such as bed rest and application of a warm compress (e.g., hot water bottle) three to five times daily for 20–30 minutes each session. It is essential to maintain warmth and avoid chilling the spine. Oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as loxoprofen sodium and diclofenac sodium, can alleviate aseptic inflammation and inflammatory pain caused by osteophyte formation. Traditional Chinese patent medicines—for example, Huoxue Zhitong Capsules—may improve local blood circulation and facilitate absorption of inflammatory metabolites.

Maintain a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and foods that scavenge free radicals—such as papaya and grapes—to reduce free radical generation and suppress inflammatory responses. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
