Is sweating of the palms and soles due to yin deficiency or yang deficiency?
Yin deficiency and yang deficiency are common syndromes in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); however, most people lack a clear understanding of these conditions and are unaware of their distinctions. Although yin and yang deficiencies typically do not cause overt or pronounced discomfort, they can severely compromise physical health and progressively weaken one’s constitution. So, is excessive sweating of the palms and soles indicative of yin deficiency or yang deficiency?
Is excessive sweating of the palms and soles due to yin deficiency or yang deficiency?
Excessive sweating of the palms and soles is generally associated with yin deficiency. Prolonged yin deficiency may lead to relative yang excess (yang hyperactivity), manifesting as night sweats, heat sensations in the palms, soles, and chest/abdomen, among other symptoms. Additional manifestations of yin deficiency may include palpitations and insomnia. Treatment typically involves nourishing yin and clearing internal heat. Causes of yin deficiency may include: inherent constitutional yin deficiency—patients are often slender with a red tongue; frequent consumption of spicy, stimulating foods such as mutton, onions, ginger, garlic, and baijiu (Chinese distilled spirit), which deplete yin fluids; and chronic sleep deprivation, which consumes yin blood and leads to yin deficiency.

General physical weakness is primarily attributable to insufficient physical activity. Consistent, appropriate exercise promotes systemic blood circulation, facilitating the delivery of nutrients carried by the blood to all parts of the body—thus helping prevent both yin and yang deficiencies. However, exercise must be moderate; excessive physical exertion may exacerbate constitutional weakness. Daily dietary habits should also be carefully managed: avoid overconsumption of rich, fatty, or meat-heavy meals. A balanced diet incorporating both lean meats and vegetables is essential for effectively preventing yin and yang deficiencies.

Patients are advised to maintain a light,清淡 diet and engage in moderate exercise to enhance immune function. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
