What could be causing the constant feeling of a foreign body in the throat?
A persistent sensation of a foreign body in the throat may result from lifestyle factors, chronic pharyngitis, or reflux laryngopharyngitis.
1. Lifestyle Factors
A persistent sensation of a foreign body in the throat may stem from frequent consumption of spicy or irritating foods or long-term smoking, both of which can induce chronic inflammation of the pharyngeal mucosa. It may also arise from excessive voice use or inadequate hydration, leading to pharyngeal edema. Additionally, heightened emotional stress, excessive work pressure, or poor sleep quality can cause sustained tension in the pharyngeal muscles, thereby producing the aforementioned symptoms.
2. Chronic Pharyngitis
This symptom may also indicate chronic pharyngitis. In affected individuals, numerous lymphoid follicles typically proliferate on the pharyngeal wall. Under inflammatory stimulation, the pharyngeal mucosa may become congested and edematous, with increased mucus secretion that adheres to the pharyngeal surface—contributing to the sensation described above.
3. Reflux Laryngopharyngitis
Reflux laryngopharyngitis is another possible cause. When gastric contents or gastric acid reflux into the pharynx, they irritate the pharyngeal mucosa, resulting in a persistent sensation of a foreign body in the throat.
