Introduction
Headache following intense sun exposure may result from prolonged exposure to high temperatures, disrupting the function of the body’s thermoregulatory center. It may also represent a migraine triggered by sun exposure. Typically, it manifests as paroxysmal throbbing pain localized to one or both temples. Alternatively, such headache may stem from inadequate cerebral blood supply—often due to elevated skin temperature causing peripheral vasodilation and redistribution of blood flow toward the skin surface, thereby reducing oxygen and blood delivery to the brain.

Headache following intense sun exposure may result from heatstroke, migraine, or cerebral hypoperfusion.

1. Heatstroke

Headache after prolonged sun exposure may indicate heatstroke, caused by dysfunction of the body’s thermoregulatory center due to extended exposure to high temperatures. Patients may simultaneously experience symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and profuse sweating; in severe cases, shock may occur.

2. Migraine

The headache may represent a migraine episode triggered by sun exposure. It typically manifests as paroxysmal, throbbing pain localized to one or both temporal regions, often accompanied by a pulsating sensation in the blood vessels.

3. Cerebral Hypoperfusion

Headache after sun exposure may reflect reduced cerebral blood flow. Elevated skin temperature following sun exposure causes peripheral vasodilation and redistribution of blood toward the skin surface, thereby reducing oxygen and blood supply to the brain. Additional symptoms may include dizziness and nausea.

Multiple factors can cause headache after sun exposure. Patients are advised to seek proper diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatment. Self-medication should be avoided, as it may exacerbate the condition.
