Can people with gestational diabetes eat cherries?
Whether or not women with gestational diabetes can eat cherries depends on whether their blood glucose levels are within the normal range.
Cherries contain abundant dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which can be beneficial for the growth and development of both the pregnant woman and the fetus. However, cherries also contain a certain amount of sugar. If blood glucose levels are well-controlled and remain within the normal range, it is acceptable to consume cherries in moderation. However, if blood glucose levels are unstable and outside the normal range, eating cherries may cause fluctuations in blood sugar, potentially leading to further elevation. This could result in adverse pregnancy outcomes such as polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid) or macrosomia (large-for-gestational-age baby). Therefore, pregnant women with gestational diabetes are advised to choose sugar-free or low-sugar fruits whenever possible to avoid rapid or significant increases in blood glucose levels and their associated risks.
Pregnant women with gestational diabetes should carefully manage their intake of starchy and fatty foods, and consume fruit preferably as snacks between meals. They should avoid eating large amounts of high-sugar fruits at one time, such as watermelon and pears.
