Can hypothyroidism cause leg swelling?
Hypothyroidism often causes leg swelling.
Hypothyroidism is a systemic metabolic disorder caused by insufficient production or reduced action of thyroid hormones due to various factors affecting the thyroid gland, such as low-iodine diet, external radiation therapy, thyroid surgery, lymphoma, scleroderma, and others. When thyroid function declines to a certain extent, it disrupts normal body metabolism, impairing timely fluid conversion or excretion. This may lead to swelling in the legs. Therefore, patients with hypothyroidism commonly experience leg edema, and sometimes facial swelling as well.
Patients diagnosed with hypothyroidism require prompt treatment. Typically, under a doctor's guidance, they can take medications to replace thyroid hormones, thereby alleviating symptoms and maintaining appropriate levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroid hormones. However, most patients with this condition require lifelong medication. Without timely treatment, symptoms may worsen and could even lead to myxedema coma.
