What foods and fruits should be avoided with Hashimoto's hypothyroidism?
Generally, patients with Hashimoto's hypothyroidism do not have strictly forbidden foods or fruits, but they are usually advised to avoid pickled foods, overly salty foods, high-fat foods, as well as high-iodine and high-cholesterol foods.
1. Pickled foods, overly salty foods, and high-fat foods
Patients with Hashimoto's hypothyroidism often experience facial swelling and hyperlipidemia. Therefore, it is generally not recommended to consume pickled foods, overly salty foods, or high-fat foods—such as cured meats and salted duck eggs—as these may worsen the condition and increase treatment difficulty.
2. High-iodine foods
Patients with Hashimoto's hypothyroidism should avoid excessive consumption of high-iodine foods such as dried shrimp, nori, and kelp. Excessive iodine intake may trigger autoimmune dysfunction and hinder disease recovery. However, moderate use of iodized salt or iodine-containing foods is usually acceptable.
3. High-cholesterol foods
High-cholesterol foods typically include fatty meats, egg yolks, and animal organs. Patients with Hashimoto's hypothyroidism should limit cholesterol intake in their diet to prevent lipid metabolism disorders and the development of hyperlipidemia.
