Effects and Benefits of Nourishing-Yin and Fire-Reducing Soup
This formula is primarily used to treat conditions caused by excessive internal fire due to yin deficiency, such as sore throat and throat swelling. It uses Siwu Decoction (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish blood, Phellodendron bark (Huangbai) and Anemarrhena rhizome (Zhimu) to nourish yin and clear heat, and Platycodon root (Jiegeng) to moisten the throat. In clinical practice, the key diagnostic indicators include sore throat, swollen gums, red tongue, and rapid pulse. If blood heat symptoms are prominent, additional herbs such as Moutan cortex (Danpi), Scutellaria root (Huangqin), Coptis rhizome (Huanglian), and Gardenia fruit (Shanzhi) may be added. For pronounced yin deficiency, Asparagus root (Lusun) and Ophiopogon tuber (Maidong) can be included. For throat swelling, honeysuckle (Jinyinhua), Belamcanda rhizome (Shegan), Isatis root (Banlangen), and Isatis leaf (Daqingye) may be added. For swelling of the lips and gums, gypsum (Shigao), Achyranthes root (Niuxi), and Cimicifuga rhizome (Shengma) are recommended. This formula is suitable only for heat syndromes and should not be used for cold syndromes.

The nourishing-yin and fire-reducing soup consists of Rehmannia root (Shudihuang), honey-fried licorice (Zhigancao), prepared ginger (Paoshengjiang), Chuanxiong rhizome (Chuanxiong), Anemarrhena rhizome (Zhimu), Asparagus root (Lusun), white peony root (Baishao), Chinese angelica (Danggui), white atractylodes (Baizhu), tangerine peel (Chenpi), Phellodendron bark (Huangbai), and fresh ginger (Shengjiang). Its function is to nourish yin and reduce internal fire.
