What is a molar pregnancy?
A molar pregnancy, generally classified as a gestational trophoblastic disease, is primarily caused by swelling and degeneration of trophoblastic tissue during pregnancy. The symptoms of this condition are usually similar to those of a normal pregnancy. It may be accompanied by menopausal-like symptoms, an enlarged uterus, and elevated blood hCG levels. Additional symptoms such as nausea and vomiting—typical of early pregnancy—may also occur. Diagnosis is mainly confirmed through ultrasound and blood hCG testing. Molar pregnancies are categorized into two types: complete and partial. In a complete molar pregnancy, all placental villi become vesicular (blister-like), no fetus forms, and there are no fetal appendages; the uterine cavity is filled entirely with vesicles. In a partial molar pregnancy, only part of the placenta is abnormal, and a viable or nonviable embryo may still be present in the uterus. It's important to note that 40% of women who experience spontaneous abortion have hydropic (vesicular) degeneration, which is not the same as a true molar pregnancy.

The early symptoms of a molar pregnancy closely resemble those of a normal pregnancy, including nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. However, the pregnancy-related reactions in molar pregnancies are often more severe and may also include signs of pregnancy-induced toxemia, such as high blood pressure and edema. Therefore, after a woman misses her period, she should carefully monitor her symptoms. Although molar pregnancy and normal pregnancy share some similarities, their differences in symptom presentation make them distinguishable. Women who notice any of the above symptoms should promptly visit a hospital for diagnosis and treatment.
