Introduction
The manifestations of advanced esophageal cancer primarily include weight loss, anemia, malnutrition, electrolyte disturbances, and cachexia. If the cancer has metastasized to multiple sites, it may present with superficial lymphadenopathy, and patients may exhibit apathy, somnolence, or even coma. Deep infiltration can lead to rupture of submucosal blood vessels, causing massive gastrointestinal bleeding, resulting in hematemesis or melena.

Esophageal cancer is a malignant tumor of the digestive system. If not treated promptly in the early stages, it can easily progress to advanced esophagitis and may even become life-threatening. What are the symptoms before death in late-stage esophageal cancer?

Symptoms Before Death in Late-Stage Esophageal Cancer

The main manifestations of advanced esophageal cancer include weight loss, anemia, malnutrition, electrolyte disturbances, and cachexia. If the cancer has metastasized to multiple sites, patients may develop swollen superficial lymph nodes and display symptoms such as apathy, drowsiness, or even coma. Deep tumor infiltration may cause rupture of submucosal blood vessels, leading to massive gastrointestinal bleeding, resulting in hematemesis (vomiting blood) or melena (black, tarry stools). In some cases, significant bleeding within a short time or aspiration can lead to fatal complications.

The causes of esophageal cancer are associated with various factors including hereditary predisposition, consumption of spicy food, eating excessively hot food, and poor water quality. There are many contributing factors to esophageal cancer, generally involving personal dietary habits such as a preference for spicy and irritating foods, consuming overly hot or cold meals, high intake of nitrosamines in food, and genetic factors.

Patients with esophageal cancer must avoid eating food that is too hot or eating too quickly, as both can severely damage the esophagus. They should also avoid salty foods such as smoked or barbecued meats. A diet consisting of light, easily digestible foods is recommended, which helps alleviate discomfort caused by esophageal cancer.
