Introduction
The normal value of blood β2-microglobulin is 1–3 mg/L in adult serum, and levels above 2.4 mg/L are considered abnormal. Elevated blood β2-microglobulin has the following clinical significance: it increases when the glomerular filtration rate and renal blood flow decrease. Its elevation is more sensitive and apparent earlier than the rise in serum creatinine concentration.

Beta-2 microglobulin is produced by lymphocytes and is a small molecular protein excreted by the kidneys, reflecting glomerular filtration. When renal function declines, what then is the normal value for beta-2 microglobulin?

Normal Value of Beta-2 Microglobulin

The normal blood level of beta-2 microglobulin in adults is 1–3 mg/L; levels above 2.4 mg/L are considered abnormal. Elevated serum beta-2 microglobulin has the following clinical significance: it increases when glomerular filtration rate and renal blood flow decrease. Its rise is more sensitive and appears earlier than an increase in serum creatinine. It is useful for monitoring rejection reactions after kidney transplantation. In IgA nephropathy, beta-2 microglobulin is significantly associated with urinary protein levels. Elevations are also seen in autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and Sjögren's syndrome, as well as in certain malignant tumors.

Beta-2 microglobulin is a low molecular weight endogenous blood cell protein commonly found in urine, blood, and brain tissue. In healthy individuals, the production rate and release from body cells remain stable, maintaining consistent levels of beta-2 microglobulin. However, levels may rise due to impaired renal function, tubular damage, chronic hepatitis, nephritis, early malignant conditions, and autoimmune diseases, with these adverse effects being clearly evident.

Serum beta-2 microglobulin testing is primarily used as part of routine monitoring for patients with multiple myeloma and lymphoma. Elevated levels are commonly observed in multiple myeloma, lymphoma, AIDS, and other immunodeficiency disorders. We hope this information is helpful to you. Wishing you good health and happiness!
