A lump has appeared behind the ear near the hairline.
A lump near the hairline behind the ear may be caused by folliculitis, sebaceous cysts, swollen lymph nodes, or other reasons. Symptoms can generally be improved with medication.
1. Folliculitis
A lump behind the ear near the hairline may result from folliculitis caused by bacterial infection. Under a doctor's guidance, antibiotic ointments can be applied to control inflammation. Commonly used medications include mupirocin ointment and erythromycin ointment.
2. Sebaceous Cyst
Overactive sebaceous glands may lead to blockage of the sebaceous duct, resulting in a sebaceous cyst. Under medical advice, anti-inflammatory ointments such as fusidic acid ointment or isotretinoin erythromycin gel may be applied.
3. Swollen Lymph Nodes
Swollen lymph nodes may occur due to infections from viruses, bacteria, or fungi, or as a result of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, or Behçet's disease. Anti-inflammatory medications taken orally as prescribed—such as cefixime or amoxicillin—can help prevent worsening of lymph node symptoms.
