Can the airplane hold relieve infant colic?
The "airplane hold" can generally help alleviate colic in newborns.
The airplane hold usually involves placing the baby face down on the forearm, with the head positioned toward the elbow and the baby's legs resting on either side of the arm. This position applies gentle pressure to the abdomen, which may relieve colic symptoms. However, this method does not treat colic itself, and medical consultation is recommended for proper treatment.
Colic is often caused by factors such as a cold abdomen or indigestion, leading to bloating and episodes of abdominal pain. In such cases, applying a warm compress or gently massaging the abdomen may help ease discomfort. However, if symptoms are severe, medications containing bifidobacteria and lactic acid bacteria should be taken under a doctor’s guidance to restore healthy gut flora and thereby reduce colic symptoms.
It is advisable to keep the newborn's abdomen warm during daily feeding to prevent chilling. Additionally, avoid vigorous shaking after feeding. If colic is due to lactose intolerance, consider switching formula or adjusting feeding methods promptly.
