Is it serious if bile is vomited?
Vomiting bile is usually serious, and patients are advised to seek timely treatment.
Vomiting bile indicates that the stomach contents have already been emptied, suggesting severe nausea and vomiting. This causes continuous spasms and contractions of the stomach, allowing bile to reflux through the pylorus into the stomach and then be expelled through the esophagus. It commonly occurs due to conditions such as bile reflux gastritis or acute gastritis. These conditions can easily lead to tears in the gastric mucosa at the cardia, resulting in vomiting of fresh blood or substances resembling coffee grounds. Symptoms may recur frequently and could even lead to complications such as gastric ulcers or stomach cancer; therefore, this condition is considered quite serious.
When bile is vomited, patients should ensure adequate rest, apply local heat therapy appropriately, and take medications such as omeprazole or mosapride citrate under a doctor’s guidance. If symptoms do not improve after medication, especially when accompanied by fever, antibiotic therapy may be used as directed by a physician. Additionally, patients should go to the hospital for further examinations to identify the underlying cause and receive targeted treatment.
