Why is my stool red after eating watermelon?
Passing red-colored stool after eating watermelon is usually due to the high content of plant pigments in watermelon that cannot be digested or broken down.
Watermelon is typically rich in fructose, malic acid, glucose, amino acids, vitamin C, lycopene, and other substances. Consuming it helps replenish energy and can provide summer heat relief, cooling effects, and promote regular bowel movements. Because watermelon contains abundant plant pigments, which the gastrointestinal tract cannot digest or decompose, these pigments are excreted along with food residue, resulting in red-colored stool. This phenomenon is generally normal and not a cause for concern. Usually, after one to two days when the watermelon is fully metabolized in the digestive system, stool color returns to normal.
Since watermelon is considered a cooling food, excessive consumption may impair the spleen and stomach. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid eating large amounts at once, especially watermelon taken directly from the refrigerator, to prevent gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea.
