What causes lips to turn purple during swimming?
Lip discoloration (cyanosis) during swimming may be caused by factors such as cold exposure, hypoxia, anemia, low blood pressure, or arrhythmia.
1. Cold Exposure
If the weather is cold and the pool water is chilly, the body may experience a drop in temperature due to cold stimulation while swimming. This can impair normal blood circulation and lead to purple lips. However, this condition is usually mild and does not require special treatment. Maintaining warmth typically allows symptoms to resolve on their own gradually.
2. Hypoxia
Holding one's breath for too long during swimming may reduce oxygen levels in the blood, leading to lip cyanosis due to lack of oxygen. Symptoms generally improve after stopping swimming promptly, resting appropriately, and breathing fresh air.
3. Anemia
In individuals with chronic anemia, the blood’s ability to carry oxygen is reduced. During swimming, this may result in insufficient oxygen supply, causing pallor or bluish discoloration of mucous membranes and lips. It is recommended to follow medical advice and take iron supplements such as ferrous sulfate tablets, ferrous fumarate docusate sodium capsules, or ferrous gluconate syrup.
4. Low Blood Pressure
Low blood pressure reduces cardiac perfusion, limiting the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs. Poor systemic circulation may lead to cyanosis of the skin and lips during swimming. Under medical guidance, medications such as octreotide acetate injection, droxidopa capsules, or midodrine hydrochloride tablets may be used to raise blood pressure.
5. Arrhythmia
Abnormal heart rhythms can impair the heart's pumping function, resulting in inadequate oxygen and blood supply to various parts of the body, which may cause abnormal lip color. It is advisable to follow medical recommendations and use medications such as metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets, procainamide hydrochloride tablets, or quinidine sulfate tablets to regulate heart rate.
If lip cyanosis persists long after swimming, it is important to seek timely medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment under professional guidance.
