The difference between iodine tincture and iodine solution
There is no difference between iodine tincture and iodine solution—they are actually the same medication.
Iodine tincture, also known as iodine solution, is made by dissolving iodine and potassium iodide in an alcohol solution. It belongs to the class of disinfectants and antiseptics and has a strong ability to kill pathogens, causing denaturation of pathogen proteins. It can be used for skin disinfection before surgery and to treat various skin infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses. However, because iodine solution is highly irritating and can significantly irritate the skin and mucous membranes, potentially causing tissue damage, it is essential to perform alcohol-based deiodization after applying it to the skin for disinfection or treatment purposes, to avoid skin injury.
Iodine solution is for external use only and should not be taken orally or applied to broken skin, eyes, or oral mucosa for disinfection. If symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, or a burning sensation occur at the application site, promptly rinse the area thoroughly with running water. In some cases, medical advice from a healthcare professional may be necessary.
