How to massage when experiencing sourness and swelling in the calf
Leg soreness and swelling can be relieved by acupressure on specific points such as Zusanli (ST36), Yanglingquan (GB34), and Chengshan (BL57), under the guidance of a physician.
1. Zusanli (ST36)
Zusanli is an acupoint on the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, located on the outer side of the lower leg, 3 cun below the犊鼻 (Dubi, ST35), one finger-breadth lateral to the anterior crest of the tibia, along the line connecting Dubi and Jiaoxi (ST41). It is commonly used to treat stomachache, abdominal distension, constipation, and other gastrointestinal conditions.
2. Yanglingquan (GB34)
The Yanglingquan point is typically found just below the knee, on the outer side of the lower leg, in the depression anterior and slightly inferior to the head of the fibula. Stimulating this point often promotes bile secretion and benefits the gallbladder, making it effective for treating liver and gallbladder disorders. It also helps relieve low back pain, knee joint pain, and lower limb paralysis, thus being useful for knee and lower extremity conditions.
3. Chengshan (BL57)
Chengshan is an acupoint on the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, located in the posterior region of the lower leg. Superficial anatomical structures at this point include the medial sural cutaneous nerve and the small saphenous vein, while deeper layers contain the posterior tibial artery and vein, tibial nerve, gastrocnemius muscle, and soleus muscle. Clinically, Chengshan is used to treat conditions such as cramping and pain in the lower back and legs, shoulder periarthritis, and abdominal pain.
In addition, acupressure on the Kunlun (BL60) point may also help relieve leg soreness and swelling, but should only be performed under medical supervision. It is important to have treatments administered by qualified professionals; self-treatment is not recommended to avoid potential injury.
