Can children take chlorpheniramine maleate tablets?
Children may cautiously take chlorpheniramine maleate tablets under a doctor's guidance.
Chlorpheniramine maleate tablets are an antihistamine that competitively blocks histamine from binding to H1 receptors, thereby inhibiting small blood vessel dilation, reducing vascular permeability and exudation, and alleviating allergic reactions. In children, they can be used to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis and allergic conditions affecting the skin and mucous membranes. Generally, there is no clearly defined absolute contraindicated age; however, it is not recommended to administer this medication to infants under 2 years old without medical supervision. This is because liver and kidney functions in children of this age group are not yet fully developed, resulting in weaker drug metabolism and excretion capabilities. They may therefore be more prone to adverse effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea. Their tolerance and response to the drug may also differ from those of older children and adults. For children aged 2 years and older, the medication should still be used strictly according to a doctor’s instructions, with dosage precisely calculated based on factors such as body weight to ensure safe and effective treatment.
During medication, attention should also be paid to diet—consuming more light and easily digestible foods while avoiding spicy and irritating foods. Additionally, maintaining good hygiene in affected body areas is important to prevent bacterial or viral infections from exacerbating local inflammation and worsening the condition.
