Introduction
Actually, "nasopharyngitis" is not a diagnosis recognized in textbooks; it can be understood as inflammation of the nasopharynx. Nasopharyngeal inflammation refers to chronic sinusitis or certain types of pharyngitis, in which infection from the nasal cavity or sinuses spreads posteriorly to involve the nasopharynx. Common symptoms in these patients include discomfort in the nasopharynx, itching at the upper part of the throat, and a sensation of something stuck that cannot be cleared by coughing or suction.

In daily life, sinusitis and nasopharyngitis are two common conditions, both of which can cause symptoms such as nasal congestion and difficulty breathing. So what are the differences between nasopharyngitis and sinusitis?

Differences Between Nasopharyngitis and Sinusitis

Actually, "nasopharyngitis" is not a formal diagnosis recognized in medical textbooks; it can be understood as inflammation of the nasopharynx. Nasopharyngeal inflammation typically occurs when chronic sinusitis or certain types of pharyngitis extend backward into the nasopharynx. Common symptoms in these patients include discomfort in the nasopharynx, itching at the upper part of the throat, and a sensation of something stuck that cannot be cleared by coughing or sniffing back mucus—symptoms that can be quite bothersome. In contrast, sinusitis primarily involves problems within the sinuses and is characterized by nasal congestion, headaches, systemic symptoms, runny nose, and sneezing due to allergies. These features make it relatively easy to differentiate sinusitis from nasopharyngitis.

Sinusitis can be treated either surgically or with medication. Surgical treatment involves complete removal of diseased tissue in the sinuses via endoscopic surgery, fully opening the sinus ostia to improve drainage while preserving healthy tissue through minimally invasive techniques. Medical treatment mainly includes taking traditional Chinese medicine aimed at dispersing wind, clearing heat, and promoting nasal patency, supplemented by herbs that detoxify and resolve blood stasis.

Individuals with respiratory conditions should pay attention: if you experience nasal blockage or breathing difficulties, seek timely medical evaluation and treatment to prevent adverse effects on your health. We hope this information has been helpful. Wishing you good health and a happy life!
