Introduction
Nasopharyngitis and rhinitis are both upper respiratory tract disorders; however, nasopharyngitis refers to concurrent inflammation of the nose and pharynx, whereas rhinitis denotes isolated inflammation of the nasal structures. Both conditions commonly present with nasal congestion and sneezing. In contrast to patients with rhinitis, those with nasopharyngitis often experience pharyngeal swelling, soreness, itching, and a dry cough. The etiology of both nasopharyngitis and rhinitis is typically attributed to bacterial or viral infections.

The underlying causes of both conditions are usually viral or bacterial infections. Therefore, antiviral therapy is often required for patients with either nasopharyngitis or rhinitis in daily clinical practice. Additionally, patients with either condition should avoid spicy and irritating foods and engage in appropriate physical exercise.
Common symptoms of nasopharyngitis include a foreign-body sensation in the nasopharynx and nasal obstruction. Some patients may also notice blood in their nasal discharge. Regarding anatomical involvement: rhinitis primarily affects the nasal mucosa or the mucosa of the nasal turbinates, whereas nasopharyngitis predominantly involves the nasopharynx, characterized mainly by congestion and swelling. Generally, these distinctions allow for reliable differentiation between the two conditions.
