How to use a thermometer
Mercury thermometers are commonly used for taking body temperature. Place the thermometer under the armpit for 5–10 minutes to obtain a reading. The specific steps are as follows:
1. Before measuring temperature, shake the mercury thermometer down to below 35°C.
2. Disinfect both hands and the skin under the armpits, then wipe them dry with a clean towel to ensure the skin remains dry.
3. Place the mercury end of the thermometer under the armpit, ensuring it is firmly in contact with the skin to prevent slipping.
4. Hold the thermometer securely in place for 5–10 minutes, then remove it to check the temperature.
5. To read the result, look at the scale through the edge located between the numbered markings. Position the scale facing upward, with the triangular side facing toward you. Locate the white column of mercury; the number aligned with the top of this line indicates the body temperature. Generally, a temperature above 37.2°C is considered indicative of fever.
