Cough and chest tightness after recovering from COVID-19
Generally, "post-COVID recovery" refers to the period after recovery from a novel coronavirus infection. If patients experience coughing or chest tightness following recovery, it is usually due to incomplete restoration of bodily functions. It is recommended that patients maintain healthy lifestyle habits to promote physical recovery.
Novel coronavirus infection is a disease caused by the invasion of the novel coronavirus into the human body. It is highly contagious and primarily manifests as fever, cough, fatigue, and diarrhea. After mutation, the virus evolved into the Omicron variant, which has an incubation period of 2–4 days, enhanced transmissibility, and faster spread, but reduced pathogenicity, with most cases being asymptomatic or mild.
Typically, after recovery, patients may still experience chest tightness or shortness of breath because their bodily functions have not fully returned to normal, especially during physical activity or emotional excitement. Since novel coronavirus infection often causes coughing, prolonged or forceful coughing may lead to lung damage. Even though the infection has resolved, if lung damage has not completely healed, symptoms such as chest tightness and shortness of breath may persist. This is generally considered a normal phenomenon after recovery, and patients need not be overly concerned. Most individuals gradually improve within about two weeks. For more severe symptoms, medications such as Lianhua Qingwen Capsules or Jinhua Qinggan Granules may be taken under a doctor’s guidance.
If coughing and chest tightness persist for an extended period after recovering from a novel coronavirus infection, timely medical evaluation and treatment are advised. In daily life, maintaining a positive mood, regular sleep patterns, consuming easily digestible and light foods, and actively engaging in physical exercise—such as walking or jogging—are recommended. Strengthening respiratory function training can help boost immunity and improve lung function.
