Can a fishy odor in the genital area resolve on its own without medication?
Fishy odor in the genital area, if not accompanied by other discomfort symptoms, may resolve on its own without medication. However, if other symptoms are present, it is less likely to heal spontaneously and medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital are recommended.
The term "fishy genital odor" usually refers to vaginal odor. This condition may be caused by mild vaginitis, inadequate cleaning of the external genitalia, failure to change underwear or sanitary products regularly, or lochia mixed with blood during the postpartum period. In most cases, it is not serious, does not involve other symptoms, and resolves spontaneously. Maintaining good daily habits is sufficient, and no special treatment is required. If, in addition to the fishy odor, the patient experiences symptoms such as genital itching or burning pain, it may indicate vaginitis—such as bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, or candidiasis—which typically does not resolve easily on its own. In such cases, patients should follow a doctor's guidance and take medications such as metronidazole tablets or tinidazole tablets.
It is important to maintain a regular lifestyle and positive mental state, clean the external genital area regularly, change underwear promptly, and follow a light diet, avoiding overeating or binge eating.
