What is neurodermatitis called in traditional Chinese medicine?
Neurodermatitis is known as "niu pi xuan" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TCM theory holds that the initial stage of this condition is usually caused by stagnation of wind, dampness, heat, and toxins in the skin, or by localized mechanical irritation. With prolonged illness, it leads to consumption of yin fluids, insufficiency of nutritive blood, and dryness and wind arising from blood deficiency, resulting in malnourishment of the skin.
Neurodermatitis, also called chronic simple lichenification, is a common chronic itchy skin disorder characterized by lichenified skin changes and intense itching. It primarily affects young adults aged 20 to 40, and is less common in the elderly and children. Clinically, it can be classified as localized or generalized, with the localized form being more prevalent. Patients should pay attention to skin care; for areas with obvious local itching, traditional Chinese herbal washes or topical applications with insecticidal and anti-itch properties may be used. Additionally, avoid washing the skin with hot water, which may further irritate the skin.
After developing neurodermatitis, it's essential first to maintain good skin hygiene. In terms of diet, avoid spicy and irritating foods, alcohol, and strong tea. Do not use alkaline soaps to clean affected areas, and avoid other adverse factors that may irritate the skin, as these could worsen the rash.
