Why has my left eyelid been twitching continuously for several days?
Continuous twitching of the left eyelid for several days may be caused by physiological factors or pathological conditions such as trichiasis or facial neuritis.
I. Physiological Factors
This may result from prolonged熬夜 (staying up late) or sustained mental stress recently, leading to overexcitement of the eye's nerves and resulting in muscle spasms. Maintaining regular sleep patterns and performing eye exercises regularly can help improve symptoms.
II. Pathological Factors
1. Trichiasis
This may occur due to an abnormal angle of the eyelashes, causing them to grow inward toward the eye. The misdirected lashes repeatedly rub against the corneal epithelium, causing significant pain and triggering ciliary muscle spasm. Following a doctor’s advice to use antibiotic eye drops or ointments such as ofloxacin eye drops, erythromycin eye ointment, or tobramycin-dexamethasone eye drops may help improve the condition.
2. Acute Conjunctivitis
This may be caused by bacterial or viral infections, or connective tissue diseases affecting the conjunctiva, leading to reduced defensive function of the conjunctiva. Inflammation then develops, and inflammatory mediators may stimulate the left eyelid, causing twitching. If caused by bacterial infection, medications such as levofloxacin hydrochloride eye drops, tobramycin eye drops, or chloramphenicol eye drops may be used under medical guidance to relieve discomfort.
In addition, facial neuritis could also be a possible cause. Timely medical evaluation and relevant examinations are recommended to identify the underlying cause and initiate appropriate treatment, which can help alleviate symptoms.
