Can the Bajau people hear sounds if their eardrums are ruptured?
The Bajau people can generally still hear sounds even if their eardrums are ruptured.
Normally, hearing occurs through air conduction and bone conduction mechanisms. In air conduction, sound waves are collected by the pinna, travel through the external auditory canal, and reach the eardrum, causing vibrations that activate the ossicular chain and transmit sound to the inner ear. In bone conduction, sound waves travel directly through the skull bones to the inner ear. Therefore, although a ruptured eardrum in the Bajau may impair eardrum function and lead to some degree of hearing loss, sound can still be perceived via air conduction reaching the eardrum.
In daily life, if a ruptured eardrum occurs, it is recommended to promptly undergo appropriate medical evaluations under a doctor's guidance. Depending on the severity of the eardrum perforation, treatment may involve medication or surgical intervention to promote healing.
