Can wearing a mask while sleeping suffocate you?
Generally, sleeping with a mask will not cause suffocation.
Common mask materials include pure cotton, bamboo charcoal fiber, polypropylene, and others, which offer good breathability, moisture absorption, and oil absorption. Waste gases and droplets exhaled from the mouth can typically pass through the filter layer without impairing normal respiratory function or causing symptoms such as breathlessness or oxygen deprivation. In most cases, wearing a mask during sleep does not interfere with normal breathing. It may even help increase the moisture level of nasal and throat mucosa, thereby reducing respiratory discomfort. However, for individuals who already suffer from nasal congestion or breathing difficulties, there might be a slight risk of oxygen deficiency, although this rarely leads to life-threatening situations.
It is recommended to choose masks with good breathability and certified quality, and to replace them regularly.
