What fruits should chemotherapy patients avoid?
Generally, cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy should avoid eating certain fruits such as durian, lychee, longan, pomegranate, and grapefruit. The specific reasons are as follows:
1. Durian
Durian is a fruit unsuitable for cancer patients. Known in many regions as the "king of fruits" or civet fruit, it may help relieve menstrual pain and aid digestion. However, durian is considered a heat-inducing food and is difficult to digest. Consuming it may increase symptoms such as bloating and indigestion. Since chemotherapy patients are typically physically weakened, ingesting heat-producing foods may trigger internal "heat" (a traditional concept referring to inflammatory or excessive metabolic conditions), potentially stimulating tumor growth and impairing the effectiveness of chemotherapy.
2. Lychee
Although lychee is believed to enhance brain function, reduce swelling, and improve skin appearance, it contains high levels of sugar. Excessive intake may hinder disease control. Additionally, lychee is categorized as a warming and dampness-producing fruit that can easily cause "heatiness," so it should be avoided during chemotherapy.
3. Longan
This fruit is beneficial for pregnant women but not suitable for patients receiving chemotherapy. It may stimulate tumor growth and worsen the condition.
4. Pomegranate
Pomegranate is rich in antioxidants, but its tannic acid content may cause contraction of the oral mucosa, leading to discomfort such as dry mouth and mouth ulcers. During chemotherapy, a patient's oral mucosa is often already damaged, so it is best to avoid consuming pomegranate.
5. Grapefruit
Grapefruit contains chemical compounds that can interact with medications, potentially interfering with the metabolism and efficacy of certain anticancer drugs. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice during chemotherapy.
In addition, chemotherapy patients should also refrain from consuming persimmons, strawberries, grapes, and similar fruits. Patients must pay close attention to their diet during treatment to avoid negatively impacting disease management.
