What's causing flaking and peeling skin on the upper eyelid?
Flaking and peeling of the upper eyelid may be due to physiological causes, or could result from pathological conditions such as allergies or seborrheic dermatitis.
I. Physiological Causes
If a person rarely drinks water or neglects to apply moisturizer or eye cream, the skin on the eyelids can become excessively dry. Prolonged dehydration may lead to flaking and peeling.
II. Pathological Causes
1. Allergy
When the eyelid area comes into contact with airborne allergens such as pollen or dust mites, or has an allergic reaction to eye creams or eyeshadows, it may trigger an allergic response causing flaking.
2. Seborrheic Dermatitis
Overuse of skincare products can disrupt the skin's natural oil-water balance, leading to increased sebum production. Subsequent infection with microorganisms such as Malassezia or Staphylococcus bacteria may invade the skin and cause inflammation.
In addition, conditions such as pityriasis alba may also be responsible. It is recommended to seek medical evaluation at a hospital and receive appropriate treatment accordingly.
