What are the causes of left-sided throat pain?
Left-sided throat pain may be caused by conditions such as acute pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis, epiglottic cyst, pharyngeal ulcer, or peritonsillar abscess on the left side. It is recommended to choose appropriate treatment methods based on the specific underlying cause.
1. Acute Pharyngitis
This condition may result from pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses or bacteria invading the pharynx and multiplying locally, leading to inflammation that affects the lateral pharyngeal lymphoid tissue and mucosa of the pharyngeal sidewall. Under medical guidance, medications such as azithromycin tablets, cefaclor capsules, or enteric-coated aspirin tablets can be used for treatment.
2. Acute Tonsillitis
Acute tonsillitis may occur due to decreased immunity, allowing pathogens in the oral cavity or tonsils to proliferate excessively, or from infections such as influenza virus or Epstein-Barr virus. If inflammation is poorly controlled, it may lead to the formation of an abscess around the tonsil. Treatment may include medications prescribed by a doctor, such as dexamethasone injection, compound betamethasone injection, or hydrocortisone injection, or surgical interventions like tonsillectomy.
3. Epiglottic Cyst
Epiglottic cysts may develop due to long-term heavy smoking or alcohol consumption, pre-existing inflammation in the throat, or injury. Larger cysts can cause traction on surrounding tissues, resulting in discomfort. Under medical advice, procedures such as high-frequency electrocautery or radiofrequency ablation may be used to remove the cyst.
4. Pharyngeal Ulcer
Pharyngeal ulcers are caused by infection or local trauma, leading to tissue defects and erosion on the surface of the pharyngeal mucosa. This condition may also present with symptoms such as difficulty swallowing. Medications such as compound chlorhexidine mouthwash, compound borax mouthwash, or watermelon frost spray may be used under medical guidance to alleviate symptoms.
5. Left Peritonsillar Abscess
This occurs when persistent inflammation around the tonsil develops into an abscess. Symptoms include fever and worsening pain in the left side of the throat. Treatment options include incision and drainage or tonsillectomy.
In addition, other conditions such as tonsillar lymphoma may also cause similar symptoms. When discomfort occurs, it is important to maintain a light diet and seek timely medical evaluation and diagnostic testing to identify and treat the underlying cause.
