Is the recurrence rate high after vocal polyp surgery?
The recurrence rate after vocal polyp surgery varies depending on individual circumstances.
1. Low recurrence rate
Vocal polyps are usually caused by excessive talking, vocal strain, or local inflammation. If the polyp has developed recently and the patient promptly receives treatment and strictly follows the doctor's instructions post-surgery—such as avoiding excessive voice use, quitting smoking and alcohol, and refraining from spicy or irritating foods—the recurrence rate is generally low.
2. High recurrence rate
If the vocal polyp has been present for a long time or is relatively large, and if the patient fails to rest adequately after treatment, frequently consumes spicy or irritating foods, continues smoking or drinking, or overuses the voice through shouting or prolonged speaking, the vocal cords may become easily damaged, resulting in a relatively high recurrence rate of vocal polyps.
