What is occiput anterior position in fetal presentation?
Occiput anterior position is what is clinically referred to as cephalic presentation.
Occiput anterior position means the fetal sagittal suture aligns with the maternal pelvic diameter, and the fetal head is positioned above the pelvis, which is considered a normal fetal position. Pregnant women with this fetal position are generally expected to have a vaginal delivery. During childbirth, the fetal head gradually rotates and emerges progressively as labor advances, which to some extent reduces the risk of fetal asphyxia and hypoxia, making it a favorable position for delivery.
In late pregnancy, women should regularly undergo abdominal color ultrasound examinations at the hospital to monitor fetal position. Abnormal fetal positions can increase the difficulty of vaginal delivery and raise the risk of fetal complications; therefore, under the guidance of a qualified physician, certain manual techniques may be needed to help correct the fetal position in a timely manner, preparing adequately for delivery. If the fetal position cannot be easily corrected or remains abnormal after intervention, cesarean section may be necessary to deliver the baby.
In addition to monitoring fetal position, pregnant women in the third trimester should also understand key fetal measurements such as head circumference and biparietal diameter to ensure a safe and normal delivery.
