Bright red blood and tissue clots suddenly appeared 12 days after medication abortion.
It is possible to suddenly experience bright red blood and tissue clots 12 days after a medical abortion. This could be a normal physiological occurrence, or it might indicate a pathological condition related to incomplete abortion or infection. An examination is necessary to identify the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
I. Physiological Causes
Bleeding following a medical abortion typically lasts 7–14 days. Physical fatigue or exposure to cold may increase the discharge of residual material and accumulated blood from the uterine cavity, resulting in the passage of bright red blood and tissue clots. This is generally considered normal and does not require special intervention.
II. Pathological Causes
1. Incomplete Abortion
If a significant amount of tissue remains in the uterine cavity after the abortion, it may lead to heavy vaginal bleeding with clots, accompanied by abdominal pain and lower back discomfort. Under medical supervision, medications such as oxytocin, Yimucao granules, or Xinshenghua granules may be used to promote the expulsion of residual tissue. In some cases, surgical evacuation of the uterus (dilation and curettage) may be necessary.
2. Infection
A medical abortion causes trauma to the endometrium. Poor hygiene or inadequate post-procedure care may result in intrauterine infection, which can cause a sudden increase in bleeding with clots, along with symptoms such as abdominal pain and fever. Under a doctor's guidance, anti-inflammatory treatment with medications such as metronidazole tablets, levofloxacin capsules, or cefuroxime axetil tablets may be prescribed.
In addition, abnormal blood clotting due to hematological disorders could also be a potential cause. It is recommended to undergo diagnostic tests such as color Doppler ultrasound and complete blood count to determine the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment.
