How effective is traditional Chinese medicine in treating gallstones?
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is not effective in eliminating gallstones themselves, but it can help alleviate discomfort symptoms caused by gallstones.
Gallstones refer to the formation of stones within the biliary system, including the gallbladder and bile ducts. TCM generally cannot dissolve or remove gallstones, but may assist in relieving various uncomfortable symptoms. For example, when gallstones trigger an acute episode of cholecystitis, patients may experience pain. In such cases, TCM can have certain therapeutic effects by helping control and relieve symptoms. Examples include medications such as Danshi Litong Pian (Gallstone Passage Tablets) and Xiaoyan Lidan Pian (Anti-inflammatory and Gallbladder Pills).
For gallstone treatment, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy may be chosen under a doctor's guidance to break the stones into smaller pieces that can then be excreted in urine. Larger gallstones may require surgical removal.
