How long does breast milk jaundice last?
Breast milk jaundice may last about 10 days, or it could persist for 4 to 11 weeks, depending on the specific circumstances.
1. Lasting about 10 days
Breast milk jaundice is usually caused by elevated bilirubin levels in a newborn's blood and typically appears around 3 days after birth. If breastfeeding is discontinued, bilirubin levels in the body gradually decrease through normal metabolism, and the condition may resolve within approximately 10 days.
2. Lasting 4–11 weeks
If breastfeeding continues, either as mixed feeding with formula or exclusive breastfeeding without any intervention, the duration may be longer. With mixed feeding, jaundice may gradually resolve over 4 to 6 weeks. With continued exclusive breastfeeding and no other interventions, it may persist for 8 to 11 weeks.
It is recommended to regularly monitor serum total bilirubin levels as directed by a physician. If bilirubin levels become too high, temporary discontinuation of breastfeeding and appropriate treatment should be conducted under medical guidance.
