Introduction
Blood is not considered a body fluid because it consists of plasma and blood cells. Blood is a special type of liquid composed of plasma and blood cells. Plasma is the liquid component of blood, containing water, proteins, electrolytes, hormones, and other substances, while blood cells include red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. In contrast, body fluids refer to the liquids within the human body, including extracellular fluid and intracellular fluid.

Generally speaking, blood is not considered a body fluid because it consists of both plasma and blood cells. A detailed explanation is as follows:

Blood is a special type of liquid composed of plasma and blood cells. Plasma is the liquid component of blood and contains water, proteins, electrolytes, hormones, and other substances, while blood cells include red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. In comparison, body fluids refer to all liquids within the human body, including extracellular fluid and intracellular fluid. Extracellular fluid includes plasma, lymph, interstitial fluid, etc., whereas intracellular fluid refers to the liquid inside cells. The components of blood are closely related to health and the normal functioning of various tissues and organs. When any component becomes abnormal, it may cause certain symptoms in the body. Changes in the levels of substances in the blood can lead to impaired organ function—for example, severe hypokalemia (low potassium) may result in cardiac arrest, which is extremely critical and requires prompt prevention and treatment.

Although blood contains plasma, it also includes blood cells; therefore, it does not fall strictly within the category of body fluids. Blood performs many vital functions in the body, including transporting oxygen and nutrients, removing metabolic waste products, maintaining acid-base balance, regulating body temperature, and providing immune defense.
