Management of sodium valproate poisoning
Sodium valproate is an antiepileptic medication that may cause poisoning if used improperly or in excessive doses. Management typically includes discontinuation of the drug, induced vomiting, dialysis, and other interventions. Specific measures are as follows:
1. Discontinue use
Upon onset of poisoning symptoms, immediately stop administering sodium valproate. Maintain airway patency and electrolyte balance, and promptly transfer the patient to a hospital for professional treatment.
2. Induced vomiting
If the condition is severe, under medical guidance, emetics such as Huoxiang Zhengqi Water (Agastache medicinal liquid), zinc sulfate tablets, or ipecac syrup may be administered to induce vomiting and gastrointestinal emptying, followed by gastric lavage at the hospital.
3. Dialysis
If the patient is unconscious, hemodialysis and hemoperfusion may be performed under medical supervision. These treatments can shorten the duration of drug effects and help protect the airway, preventing aspiration.
In addition, pharmacological induction of vomiting may also be used in treatment. During management, closely monitor the patient's clinical status and adjust the treatment plan accordingly. If symptoms of sodium valproate poisoning occur, prompt medical attention is recommended.
