What is bilateral pulmonary emphysema and is it serious?
In general, bilateral pulmonary emphysema is usually quite serious and may be caused by factors such as viral infection, bacterial infection, or an imbalance between proteases and antiproteases. It is recommended to treat according to the underlying cause. Specific analyses are as follows:
1. Viral Infection
Infections caused by influenza viruses or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) may lead to bilateral pulmonary emphysema. It is advisable to take antiviral medications under a doctor’s guidance, such as ribavirin tablets or acyclovir tablets.
2. Bacterial Infection
Pulmonary emphysema can also result from bacterial infections in the lungs, such as those caused by Haemophilus influenzae or Staphylococcus. Antibacterial medications, such as amoxicillin capsules or roxithromycin tablets, may be prescribed by a physician for treatment.
3. Protease-Antiprotease Imbalance
Under normal conditions, proteases and antiproteases in the body are balanced. If one increases or decreases significantly, it may disrupt structural integrity in the lungs, leading to emphysema. Under medical supervision, bronchodilators such as aminophylline or β2 receptor agonists can be used to dilate the bronchi and relieve symptoms.
In addition, pulmonary emphysema may also be age-related (senile emphysema). When necessary, surgical intervention may be considered under medical advice.
