Is atelectasis serious?
In general, the severity of atelectasis depends on its underlying cause. A detailed analysis is as follows:
1. Not severe
Atelectasis usually refers to insufficient lung ventilation. When the lungs are infected by pathogens such as viruses or bacteria, pulmonary inflammation may occur, and under inflammatory stimulation, atelectasis might develop. With proper medical treatment prescribed by a doctor, it can typically be cured and is generally not considered serious.
2. Severe
If atelectasis results from tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection leading to tuberculous proliferation, it can usually be cured with appropriate and standardized medication as directed by a physician, and thus is not particularly severe. However, if the condition is not properly treated, the infection may worsen and spread from the lungs to other parts of the body, potentially developing into disseminated disease, which is typically more serious.
Patients with atelectasis should pay attention to their surrounding environment and personal hygiene in daily life. They should avoid spicy, stimulating, and greasy foods. It is advisable to consume more fresh fruits and vegetables appropriately. Additionally, regular follow-up visits to the hospital for check-ups are recommended.
