Introduction
Whether persistent cough indicates "white lung" depends on the presence of lung inflammation. If a person has a persistent cough but examination shows no lung inflammation, it is usually not "white lung." However, if severe pneumonia is present, with inflammatory infiltration in the lungs causing persistent cough along with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and breathing difficulties, and a chest X-ray reveals large white areas in the lungs, this typically indicates "white lung."

Generally, whether persistent coughing indicates "white lung" should be determined based on the presence of pulmonary inflammation. If there is no lung inflammation, it is not considered "white lung"; otherwise, it may be "white lung." Specific analysis is as follows:

1. Not "white lung"

Coughing is a reflexive defensive action of the body that helps clear foreign substances from the respiratory tract and airways. If someone experiences persistent coughing but examination reveals no pulmonary inflammation, it usually does not indicate "white lung." Instead, it may be caused by factors such as cold exposure irritating the airways, common colds, or acute tonsillitis.

2. Is "white lung"

If a person has severe pneumonia with inflammatory infiltration in the lungs, persistent coughing accompanied by symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and breathing difficulties may occur. When chest X-rays show large white opacities in the lungs, this typically indicates "white lung," which represents a serious form of pneumonia requiring prompt treatment.

It is recommended to seek timely medical evaluation at a respiratory medicine department when experiencing persistent coughing. After identifying the underlying cause, appropriate management should be selected under a doctor's guidance. If diagnosed with "white lung," aggressive treatment is essential to prevent respiratory failure and life-threatening complications.
