The three stages of cardiopulmonary resuscitation
The three stages of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), in order, are chest compressions, opening an artificial airway, and rescue breathing.
1. Chest Compressions
First, if the patient is wearing tight or thick clothing, promptly remove any excessive garments and lay the patient flat on their back. Locate the midpoint of the line connecting the two nipples and begin compressions at this point. This procedure helps restore the patient's cardiac pulsation.
2. Opening an Artificial Airway
If the patient has vomit or secretions, clear them immediately. Keep the patient's face upward, then use both hands to lift the lower jaw forward and upward, attempting to position the lower teeth in front of the upper teeth as much as possible. This maneuver helps restore the patient's breathing.
3. Rescue Breathing
If the patient's breathing function has not resumed, while maintaining the above position, the rescuer should administer rescue breaths. Take a deep breath, then firmly seal your mouth over the patient's and blow strongly until visible chest rise occurs.
It is recommended that in case of emergency, first aid measures should be implemented as soon as possible to avoid missing the optimal window for resuscitation.
