Introduction
Valsartan and nifedipine can generally be taken together. The combination of valsartan and nifedipine is particularly suitable for patients with mild to moderate primary hypertension that cannot be controlled by a single drug, such as stage 2 hypertension (systolic/diastolic blood pressure ≥160/100 mmHg). This combination exerts a favorable synergistic effect, helping patients achieve and maintain normal blood pressure levels more quickly and effectively.

Valsartan and nifedipine can generally be taken together, but this should be done under the guidance of a physician.

Valsartan typically works by blocking the type I receptor for angiotensin II. This leads to increased levels of angiotensin II, which then stimulates unblocked AT2 receptors and counteracts the effects of blocked AT1 receptors, resulting in vasodilation and reduced blood pressure. Nifedipine lowers blood pressure by reducing myocardial contractility and dilating blood vessels, thereby decreasing myocardial oxygen consumption. In clinical practice, these two medications can be used in combination and are particularly suitable for patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension not adequately controlled by a single agent—such as those with stage 2 hypertension (systolic/diastolic blood pressure ≥160/100 mmHg). The combination can produce a synergistic effect, helping patients achieve and maintain normal blood pressure levels more quickly and effectively.

When using these medications, it is important to note that they are contraindicated in patients who are allergic to any component of the drugs, or who have previously experienced cardiogenic shock, or who have unstable angina.
